Zinc got its name and its early growth from the zinc and lead mining that boomed in the hills of eastern Boone County around the turn of the twentieth century. A bit of Zinc history

Named for the zinc mined in the area, the town saw mining begin in the 1890s and boom during World War I; after the Flood of 1927 damaged the town, a swinging pedestrian bridge was built high above Sugar Orchard Creek during the rebuilding.
